The album’s more upbeat tracks come by way of ‘Love Fool’ – a perky ode to the thrill of the chase that borrows from the ’80s with a snappy, synthy base and gleaming keys sprinkled throughout – and feel-good pop number ‘Another Day’. The equally straightforward ‘No Makeup’ is another clear standout, where EXO take a more flirtatious and inviting approach lyrically. On the flip side, the stripped-down ‘Hear Me Out’ is rollicking fun, with lyrics that goad their proverbial lover to just let go and have a good time: “No need to hesitatе / Oh, babe, hold me closely / Thinking too much messes with your flow / You know I don’t play games.” It’s by far the simplest song on the record but also perhaps the best, proving that less is indeed more. All three are perfectly palatable, but perhaps not the most memorable when stacked against other offerings on the album. There’s also the rowdy ‘Private Party’, which leaves very little to the imagination lyrically ( “Touch my body / Our own private party””). Love song ‘Regret It’ features hints of new jack swing and old-school hip-hop, while ‘Cinderella’ is firmly rooted in synthpop, coupled with an explosive, bass-heavy chorus. Sonically, EXO get a bit nostalgic for the ’90s on ‘Exist’. There’s no denying that EXO have crafted an appetising recipe with this one – like a light, chilled drink in the summer heat that leaves you wanting more. Vocally and visually, it features all the EXO trademarks: clean layered harmonies, murmured ad-libs and a sinuous choreography showcased in the accompanying music video. Laden with Dionysiac undertones, the song takes attraction as its main motif lyrically. One of the most buoyant offerings on ‘Exist’ is title track ‘Cream Soda’, which opens the album. Once those layers are peeled back, at the core is a group that confidently and deftly showcases a vocal depth, range and maturity on a record that feels like a homecoming worthy of the wait. Their new studio album is easily digestible and outwardly minimalist – but there are multiple layers at play here. On the surface, ‘Exist’ might feel like a relatively risk-averse release from EXO, the boyband who gave us groundbreaking K-pop hits like ‘Obsession’, ‘Tempo’ and ‘Ko Ko Bop’.

They dont really feel different from a normal mission. Just having simple theme based objectives gives you very little when every world looks exactly the same. The city map is fun, but more specialized environments for each enemy race. The swamp, desert, volcano, snowy areas are fine. With the new funding, Clever will be investing in its team and product, and will be considering new international markets to go after. “Our goal is to help all schools, and that includes international as well,” Bosmeny told me. It’s also got its eye on the overseas market. Bosmeny says it’s the company’s goal to become the industry standard here in the U.S., which is partly why the company raised the new round of funding. uses its platform.īut that just means the company has a lot more work to do to capture the other 80 percent of schools not yet using Clever. The company estimated that now one in five schools in the U.S. That number has grown to 30,000 schools, including eight of the top 10 school districts in the country. In March, when it announced its last funding round, it had 18,000 schools signed up. In part, that growth is just due to the increase in the number of schools Clever is working with. Those developers are seeing app installs grow more than 220 percent over the past year. According to CEO Tyler Bosmeny, Clever now works with more than 150 developers that make their apps available through its platform, including Scholastic, Amplify, DreamBox, and The College Board. It’s a value prop that seems to work pretty well for all parties involved. They are charged on a per-school basis to connect. Meanwhile, Clever makes money from app developers who benefit from the improved ease-of-use and being a part of the Clever distribution network. Schools and school districts are happy to sign up for the platform because it makes life a lot easier for them - and also because it’s free. Rather than having to manage individual student passwords for each app used in a class, Clever simplifies the process by providing a single place for them to sign in and access learning apps. “It was the vision combined with the traction that they’re seeing… which convinced us this is a company that has a real opportunity to change how the online education system works,” Mhatre told me by phone.Ĭlever provides what is essentially an API layer for the education market, enabling schools to quickly sign up for and get up and running with a number of different education apps all from a single dashboard.Īpp makers integrate with Clever to enable single-sign on among students, which alleviates one of the major pain points for teachers and students alike. But Mhatre said the firm was impressed with the technology that Clever had developed, along with the adoption that it’s seen in just a few years since launch. It’s a bit of a curious investment for Lightspeed, which typically invests at the Series A stage and rarely writes a check this large. And as part of the round, Lightspeed founding partner Ravi Mhatre is joining the board. With the new funding, Clever has raised a total of about $43 million. The funding is being led by Lightspeed Venture Partners and includes participation from existing investor Sequoia Capital, as well as new investors GSV Capital and Peter Thiel. Thanks to pretty incredible traction in an industry that historically has been loathe to adopt technology, the company has raised a new, $30 million round of financing just one year after its last round. The company has managed to get them on board mostly by providing a free service that provides immense value to teachers and students alike. Since launching two-and-a-half years ago, the company has added tens of thousands of schools to its platform. Conventional wisdom seems to be that due to the bureaucratic nature of the industry, it’s nearly impossible to get wide-scale adoption at the institutional level.Ĭlever seems to be an exception. It’s not often you hear about companies actually disrupting the education market. And the characters have to both feel and manifest that pressure in their actions. One character is unaware the entire situation was a prank gone wrong, whilst the other, feeling guilty, has to hold their tongue.Īgain, the bottle episode is about pressure. This is a great way to instil conflict into the episode. Sometimes we see a character knowingly trap someone in a situation, to prank them, but it backfires. Or perhaps, in confinement, one of your characters reveals a secret, which causes conflict between them and another. We as viewers enjoy seeing characters struggle, overcoming tough situations and developing as the story progresses.įor example, one of your characters could have an important date, that should they miss, could end the relationship at hand. Nothing should ever be simple for your characters. Make Things Difficult For Your Characters A singular location can apply pressure to the characters and we need to feel this in the drama. Make the most of the setting and its unique characteristics and make sure the characters have a relationship with the setting. What is its atmosphere? If it’s a previously visited location, is there something we (or the characters) might have missed up until this point? If the story involved characters stuck in a lift, and one of them happens to be an electrician, the situation would be resolved within no time, lacking the drama & conflict all scripts need.įurthermore, setting the episode in one location allows you to really explore the contours of that location.Be creative! Raise the stakes for your characters and make them struggle. How could you use this to your advantage? Let’s say your location is a closet, and you have two characters that are locked inside it. Whatever your setting is, be it an elevator, locked room or underground bunker, you’ve got to use the location to heighten the drama. Let’s look at the essential building blocks of writing a bottle episode. A bottle episode can be and often is a showpiece within the series. And in recent years bottle episodes have gone from just money savers to opportunities for the creative team to really flex their creative muscles. Writers have to constantly adapt to the locations and storylines they have at their disposal.īottle episodes, though they restrict writers to one setting and a certain number of characters, also open up opportunity for creativity. One week we see an epic bloodbath full of explosions & effects, next week, we might find our characters stuck in an elevator, opening up to each other. For instance, the Friends Season 4 finale, was set in London (where Ross marries Emily) and divided into two parts. This is why we often see a season finale set in a one-off location. Whether it is a specific stunt, effect or an exotic location, producers will invest money in the most important episode of that series. This is often the result of production companies spending more money on certain episodes. Imagine your favourite TV series, and there will likely be at least one bottle episode within that series. Center around a particular problem or situation that needs resolving by the end of the episode.Feature minimal characters compared to the rest of the series.Take place within a restricted period of time.Take place in one location or in a restricted amount of locations compared to usual. They can shine a spotlight on characterisation amidst heavy action, or force characters into a revealing situation. Not only do they serve as budget savers though, but they can also provide a change of pace and illuminate some of the series’ running themes. These will normally be episodes in the middle of the series where the budget has been prioritized mainly towards the season finale.A bottle episode is a low budget episode, primarily set in a single location, often with a reduction of the main cast.TV series have a fixed budget, and while you could think production costs would be spread evenly across episodes, it’s actually far from it. To Conclude: What To Remember About Writing Bottle Episodesīottle episodes require a big amount of imagination in a restrictive setting. Why Does This Work Well As a Bottle Episode?.Why does this work well as a bottle episode?.What makes this a good example of a bottle episode?.Friends – ‘The One Where No One’s Ready’. It started running at around 60-65 degrees. I changed 2 cameras to 4K, resulting in 4 4K and 4 1080p cameras. The Intel had been running fairly hot, around 55-56 degrees Celsius at the CPU with that configuration. While I was in the process of replacing the 1080p cameras with other 4K cameras, the M1 mini arrived. I was using the Intel with 8 cameras, 2 of them 4K and 6, 1080p, all with human detection with one also having vehicle detection. Don't think for a second about buying the Intel if you are going to use it for SecuritySpy. Long story short, M1 is far superior to the Intel machine. This machine replaced the 2018 Mac mini with 3.2 GHz 5-Core Intel i7 with 32 GB RAM (that is the top of the line Intel Mac mini). I have been using an M1 Mac mini with 16 GB RAM for 4 days and I wanted to share my findings. Not a fair comparison, but I’m currently running the same cameras in Blueiris (which only runs on Windows), on an Intel i7 6700 / 8GB RAM machine, and it’s sitting at 80-100% CPU all day long.Īnd forget about viewing all the cameras at once on it, it will def peg it at 100% and render Blueiris unusable. Having two more cameras installed today by my Mobotix installer, but with this performance it will not be an issue. set at 100% just for giggles.ĬPU average is hovering and RAM I have ordered a 16GB model which will not arrive until Jan 4th, so I bought this one to see what the impact would be with the smaller 8GB RAM configuration and so far so good. I am pushing 28 Mobotix cameras at full speed (10 fps limited on the camera end), and H264 qual. Wanting to replace our Blueiris system, so I am trying SS out at our office building on an M1 Mac mini 8GB / 512 SSD that I just bought yesterday, and the performance is incredible. In comparison, the M1's hardware decoding capabilities are a bit lower than the Intel's, but its software capabilities are much higher, and in addition it doesn't have the above limitation, so when doing both hardware+software processing you get the sum of both. The issue with the Intel is that adding software decoding on top of this does not increase performance further - there seems to be some interaction here between software and hardware decoding that prevents this, which is probably a limitation of the chip design. Its hardware decoding capabilities are provided by Intel's Quick Sync Video module build into the CPU, which is very powerful. If you compare your Intel MacBook Pro against the M1, with hardware-only H.264 or H.265 decoding, I expect that the Intel will provide better performance. You should see that decoding H.265 across both hardware and software is even faster - I'm seeing a throughput of 570 fps, which is fantastic (about the same performance as a 10-core iMac Pro). Please report back with your - yes, these are the results I'm seeing too on the M1 chip. For example, this would be 20 cameras each, 25 cameras each etc. Then, to calculate the maximum number of cameras that your Mac can handle, divide this number by the frame rate at which each camera is streaming. So, for example, you might get a result of 200fps. The tool will then calculate the maximum rate at which your Mac is capable of decoding frames. To test your Mac's internal hardware, disable the Software option and enable the Internal hardware option. The test to run is either the H.264 Decode test or the H.265 Decode test, depending on whether your cameras supply H.264 or H.265 video. The best way to benchmark your Mac is to use our new VideoCodecTest utility. Rather, each Mac has a certain maximum capability for decoding a certain rate of video frames of a certain resolution. So I look forward to some real M1 benchmarks when possible, and I will report back here when I have - there isn't a hard limit of 16 streams. I'm not allowed to provide benchmarks, but I can tell you that the DTK performs well for both decode and encode, and it's likely that the M1 will be significantly better. We will have to see what the real-world performance of these will be - we will get our hands on one in due course, but if any user receives delivery of one in the near future, please get in touch. Yes, it's virtually guaranteed that the M1 will offer high-performance H.264 and H.265 hardware-accelerated video compression and decompression. I have the target note in mind to land on, but how do I know which note to START on to get there? You do this effortlessly – cool licks and phrases that lots of people want tabs for so they can learn them. I’ve been watching your videos about lead playing for a few years, and have learned heaps about the theory – basically why a given note sounds really perfect at the end of a phrase over a given chord (the target note I guess), and why others don’t, but that doesn’t really get me truly improvising. The usual tsunami of gratitude, praise and affirmation – you must have excellent self-esteem! And well deserved. I knew just running up and down the scale sounded painful, but I couldn’t put together from what I heard the basic structure of putting the notes together.īig Thanks again and looking forward to more video lessons from you. This being something I thought I would die first before I could do. Now I think with this lesson that I can start creating melodic blues solos. I have been a premium member for a couple of years and unfortunately don’t have enough time to play daily or watch all your videos, although I have gotten good training from other videos you have made. I now actually think I am starting to heard how to create blues phrases from this lesson and listening/watching other blues players. I realize now why a chord progression like BB King Darlin you know I love you goes like that with the solo and why the notes you outline fit. You have finally explained it so well now. If they have, I haven’t seen it and I am sure I have watched 100’s of guitar soloing videos. Now I know how to connect the notes and I don’t know why no one has explained it like this before. I have gotten so mad being able to play a complicated song Chet Atkins version of Vincent, but couldn’t play a simple blues solo. Face it, on a major chord progression anyone can pick random notes from a major scale basically and it makes a melody. I started in classical guitar when I was 16 so the Blues has been somewhat something mystic to me. Occasionally I would jam and not have a clue why I sounded good as opposed to mostly sounding lost and like crap if I could even form a simple original phrase. The reason being that I have always had trouble soloing the blues even though I know all the major and minor pentatonic scales. I have played off and on for 40 years and this is I think the best lesson I have ever seen. Man I can’t tell you how much this lesson means to me. Is there a special reason? Because the 5 is a landing note with the IV cord? Why don’t you mention the 5 as a landing point with the I and the V chord. In the V-chord you can land on the notes of the C7-chord form (here this is the E7 dominant chord).īut one thing puzzles me. In the IV-chord you can land on the notes of the A-chord form (here this is the D major chord) and on the flat 7 of this form. In the I-chord you can land on the notes of the E-chord form (which is in this position the A major chord) and also on the flat 7 of this form. If I am correct this makes the position of the landing points very easy. But you would probably say you mix the minor and the major pentatonic, like you said with the 3 of the I-chord. In the same way, if I am correct, you can also land on the 3 of the IV chord (D), although it is not in the pentatonic form 1. If the underlaying chord was a minor chord (Am or Am7) than this 3 would clash with the flat 3 of the Am7. If I understand you correct with the I-chord you can play the 3 because the underlaying chord is a major chord (A or A7). Cozette Darby, senior administrative officer at Oaks Christian High School, said Fike taught high school English but hasn’t worked at the institution since 2014.Thanks again Brian for your wonderful lesson.
